Most fence problems don’t announce themselves — they show up gradually, as small things you notice but don’t act on until something stops working entirely. A post that looks slightly off. A gate that takes a little more effort to close than it used to. A rust spot near the ground that wasn’t there last season.

The reason it matters to catch these things early is straightforward: a fence is protecting something that matters to you. Your kids. Your pets. Your property. Your privacy. A fence that’s starting to fail is a fence that’s starting to fail at that job — and the longer it goes, the more involved the repair becomes. Here’s how to read what your fence is telling you.

The Push Test — Start Here

Before you look at anything else, walk your fence line and push firmly on each post. Not the panels — the actual post itself. A post that is solid and correctly set in Austin’s soil should not move at all when you push it. If it wobbles, rocks, or shifts even slightly, that post has lost its grip in the ground.

This is the single most reliable indicator of fence health we know of, and it takes about ten minutes to walk a standard residential perimeter. Most homeowners have never done it. The ones who have usually find at least one post that surprises them.

A leaning post is the version you can see from a distance. A post that pushes but doesn’t lean yet is earlier in the failure cycle — and much cheaper to address. Signs Your Posts May Need Attention

Beyond the push test, there are visual signs worth looking for:

A post that has developed a visible lean — even a slight one — away from the fence line. A fence leaning more than 15 degrees indicates serious structural issues requiring immediate professional assessment, but a lean of any degree in Austin’s clay soil is worth taking seriously before it gets to that point.

Gaps opening between the soil and the base of a post — this means the post has heaved upward or the soil has pulled away from it during a dry spell. Either way, the footing is compromised.

Concrete that’s cracked or tilted at the post base — visible above grade, this means the footing has moved enough to show.

Rails that have started to pull away from post connection points — if you can see daylight between a rail and the post it’s connected to, the post has moved enough to start affecting the fence panels.

Signs Your Gate Needs Attention

Gates are the first place fence problems usually show up in daily use because they’re the only part of the fence you interact with every day. If something is off with a gate, it’s worth investigating before it gets worse.

A gate that requires lifting to latch — this usually means the post has shifted and the gate is no longer hanging level. The latch isn’t the problem; the post is.

A gate that drags on the ground at any point in its swing — same cause. A gate that was correctly installed and now drags means something has moved.

A gate that has developed visible sag on the latch side — the hinge side is holding, but the latch side has dropped. This is either hinge wear or a shifted post, and both are repairable.

A gate that swings open on its own — a gate that won’t stay closed when latched, or that swings in wind it previously handled, usually means a latch or drop rod has worn out or the gate is no longer sitting level in its frame.

Signs of Rust and Coating Failure

On a steel fence, rust shows up in two main places: near the ground where the post meets the soil, and at weld points where the powder coat is thinnest or was chipped during installation.

The distinction that matters is surface rust versus structural rust. Surface rust is discoloration — orange or brown staining on the metal surface that wipes off and leaves solid metal underneath. This is manageable and, caught early, cleans up and refinishes well.

Structural rust has eaten into the metal itself. You’ll feel it — the metal surface is soft, pitted, or flaky under the rust rather than solid. If you press on it with a screwdriver and the metal gives way, that section has lost structural integrity and needs to come out.

Run your hand along the base of every post and along the bottom rails, particularly anywhere lawn equipment has been hitting. These are the highest-risk spots for coating damage that leads to rust.

Signs of Weld Failure

On a custom-welded steel fence, the welds at connection points — where rails meet posts, where pickets attach to rails — are where stress accumulates over time. A weld that’s starting to fail shows as a visible crack or gap at the connection point, or as a rail or picket that has started to move independently of what it’s connected to.

You can also check by pushing laterally on fence panels. A panel that’s solidly welded should feel rigid. A panel that flexes or shifts when you push it has a weld somewhere that’s started to let go.

Signs of Storm or Impact Damage

These are usually obvious — a vehicle backed into a section, a storm threw debris into the fence, a tree branch came down on it. The visible damage is easy to spot. What’s less obvious is whether the impact also affected the posts on either side, which can be stressed or pushed slightly out of position even when the panel absorbed most of the force.

After any vehicle impact or significant storm, push-test the posts on either side of the obvious damage before assuming the problem is contained to the section you can see.

What to Do If You Find a Problem

The honest answer is: call someone sooner rather than later. Almost every fence repair we do would have been smaller and less expensive if it had been addressed earlier.
